Are spas allowing clients to discriminate against men?
When it comes to the spa and wellness industry, females have traditionally dominated the industry. The number of females opting for beauty and spa training, far outweighs the number of male students, making the candidates for spa therapist roles, more female than male and creating an assumption by the public, that most therapists in spas will be female. However, there is a definite argument to suggest that the industry has a history of discriminating against male therapists.
From running a platform that provides temporary staffing for spas, I have witnessed first-hand, the number of spas that refuse to even consider the option of having a male therapist on their team. Approximately 70% of spas that I have interacted with in this role, have refused a male therapist based solely on their gender and not on their skill set. The fear being, that their clients will not feel comfortable with a male therapist because it is not the ‘norm.’
However, the truth is, diversity in a spa team can significantly enhance the overall client experience and make the industry, as a whole, more appealing to male clients.
If we can take the gender stigma out of the spa industry, it stands to reason that more men will feel comfortable about going to the spa for their health and wellbeing.
One of the primary reasons to include male therapists in your spa is to provide clients with more options. Some male clients may feel more comfortable receiving services from another man, particularly for deep tissue massages or body treatments. Likewise, some female clients may prefer a male therapist for their technique, strength, or personal comfort. Having both male and female therapists ensures every client can choose based on their preferences.
Male therapists often bring a different level of physical strength, which can be beneficial for clients seeking deep tissue or sports massages. Many athletes and individuals with chronic muscle tension require firmer pressure, which some male therapists can naturally provide, with less risk of RSI than a female therapist. By offering a diverse range of therapists with various skill sets, you cater to a broader client base and protect the health and wellbeing of your team.
The spa and wellness industry should be a place of inclusivity and diversity. By hiring male therapists, you help challenge outdated gender stereotypes that not only suggest only women can excel in this field but also suggest that only women can experience the benefits of the industry. This can encourage more men to consider careers in the industry, foster a more balanced workplace dynamic and increase your client reach. Men who might otherwise feel hesitant to book spa services may be more inclined to visit a facility where they know male therapists are available.
Diverse teams often bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and improved problem-solving skills. A spa that fosters an inclusive culture with both male and female therapists creates a more dynamic and well-rounded work environment. This can lead to increased job satisfaction, better teamwork, and overall improved service quality.
